Pros & Cons

  • The best thing about Clyde & Co is that, although it is a large international firm, it has the feel of a smaller firm - the reason being, from the beginning you are given autonomy, responsibility and meaningful tasks.
  • Great work culture and friendly team. Good work/life balance. I have worked in several law firms and can say that Clyde & Co is truly a gem among law firms.
  • My team's partners and senior lawyers are wonderful mentors and exceptionally kind and vibrant people. They strike a great balance between delivering the work, meeting deadlines, and not taking life too seriously.
  • The level of responsibility I am given is good for my development but not burdensome.
  • The friendly and approachable nature of all employees.
  • Pay is mid-level.
  • We have high billable targets - we are asked to bill between 6.5 - 7 hours per day, which is frustrating if you are a junior and have little control over the work you are allocated.

Career Prospects
In terms of promotions, there is a typical law firm structure at Clyde & Co. Generally, once an Associate is near 5 years post-admission they are considered for a promotion to Senior Associate. However, the firm has made it clear that the timeline is not strict and if individuals display qualities that are beyond their own job role they could be considered for a promotion.

Culture
Generally, the firm culture is good. However, your day to day experience will depend on your team. Different partners foster different cultures within their teams. In my team, we are encouraged not to consider hierarchy in some circumstances, only when it makes sense. For example, we are encouraged to give our opinions even as juniors.

We are a very LGBT-friendly firm. There are many women in senior roles in my team. Our team supports people seeing their family and working flexible hours for childcare.

As a graduate, I do the first cut of things like letters, statements, emails. I also perform legal research, document discovery, and preparation of court documents. Graduates perform time-consuming tasks, like drafting chronologies. In my downtime, I write articles.

Great location next to Wynyard. The building is new. Most grads have their own office which is great. Dress code is professional, however, if you are not meeting a client or going to court it is not as formal as other law firms - relatively relaxed dress code and casual Friday is very casual (you can wear jeans and a t-shirt).

I am currently happy with my salary. I believe it is competitive with other top tier graduate salaries. However, upon speaking to my colleagues several years my senior, I don't believe there is a great jump in salary increases.
