As a member of the Commercial Litigation team, I often complete research, draft advice, draft correspondence, and manage files.

As a graduate, I have a range of responsibilities. I primarily assist with the drafting of contracts for mid-size developments, greenfield renewable project, and PPPs, in which I am usually engaged directly under a partner or senior associate. Additionally, I have helped project manage 2 major due diligence processes, which has provided broad exposure to a range of practice areas, developed my leadership and communication skills, and fostered my relationships across the firm (including in other offices).

I am involved in a number of matters across a different number of teams. I have been supported by my seniors and so have been able to pursue a variety of work. Some work involves complex contract interpretation. Other times, it involves advice writing. In other circumstances, it involves drafting contracts and executing transactions. As I've mentioned, I am grateful that I am not delegated the more standard type administrative or research type tasks - I interact with clients daily and engage in the actual strategy of matters. In some cases, I work on matters directly with my mentor partner. However, I am also able to work directly with other partners if I have expressed interest in their areas. Day-to-day, I am also involved in a number of non-matter related initiatives which the firm supports: private international law opportunities, public law and constitutional law, cultural diversity programs. Responsibilities include organising committee meetings, carrying out decisions, holding feedback sessions, liaising with partners.

I often feel like I am doing work above my skill level which, while stressful, is a great learning opportunity and I feel as if I am adding value to my team. My days typically involve drafting correspondence and documents, as well as being in charge of monitoring inboxes and incoming/outgoing correspondence. My mentor partner is very good at ensuring I have exposure to lots of different kinds of work.

I attend to various tasks assigned to me on the matters I am involved in. I also foreshadow tasks that may be required. The tasks I work on include drafting emails, assisting with the preparation of submissions and evidence as well as preparing documents to assist the teams understanding of the matter.

At a high level, my main responsibilities revolve around supporting the senior lawyers (especially partners) of my team. In tax, the main question of every task is 'how much tax do I have to pay?' However, my day-to-day tasks are different each day - it could be: reviewing contracts to see if they trigger any stamp duty liability; writing submissions to the state revenue office for an objection; or writing legal advice on a tricky point of law, to name a few!
