Dropbox Inc. is an American company operating a file hosting service called Dropbox. It is headquartered in San Francisco, California, U.S. The company was founded in May 2007 by Houston and it was named Evenflow, Inc. at that time. Dropbox was launched in 2008 during an annual technology conference called TechCrunch Disrupt. In October 2009, the company was renamed Dropbox, Inc. 

The idea behind founding a file hosting service was to provide people with a space where they can safely store their data and securely transfer files. He got this idea after forgetting his USB flash drive. He was a student at MIT at that time and his company saw steady user growth after its establishment. 

The company was the first in the tech sector to shift to a remote workforce during the pandemic. It also came up with a ‘virtual first’ initiative as a part of the company’s long-term remote working plan. The company has apps for Apple macOS, Microsoft Windows, and Linux computers. It also has mobile apps for Windows Phone, iOS, and Android smartphones and tablets. 

The company exceeded the 1 million registered users milestone in April 2009 and had more than 50 million users in October 2011. In 2012, Dropbox, Inc crossed 100 million users, 500 million in 2016, and a whopping 700 million in 2021.
